Von Paul

Von Paul Read, b. 1949, is an American painter, muralist and illustrator based primarily in the West Coast of the United States. His work spans cultural influences drawing from everything from cave paintings and prehistoric sculpture and pottery to alchemy, tarot, astrology, mysticism, Jungian psychology, 50s kitsch and Americana, postmodern abstraction, and counterculture iconography.

Read, or Von Paul, as he is known, has done over 8,000 small form “doodles,” as he calls them, many of which are mandalas, leading to the nickname Mandala Man. Von Paul is often found selling his work on milk crates on the sidewalk on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Los Angeles, where his fans and clientele include renowned celebrities such as Robert Downey, jr., Brock Pierce and Meryl Streep.
